FAMILY ……when you can’t be there
Karen Sorensen, Ph.D., Director
2nd FAMILY is a special
program for sons, or daughters, or other family members living away
from home, in San Diego County, who may need some assistance in
day-to-day living. We provide a caring, responsible service that
includes supervision, coaching, counseling, direction, monitoring,
training, and teaching - on a sensitive, as-needed basis.
Life in a city can sometimes
be overwhelming….and families often worry about their loved
ones living apart. 2nd FAMILY is a program that can help provide
peace of mind for our clients and their families. With 2nd FAMILY,
we do more than just counseling and psychotherapy. We provide our
clients with care and assistance with day-to-day living.
2nd FAMILY is a special
type of assistance. It’s not just helping clients determine
what they need, but walking them through the process. We work to
facilitate competence and
independence slowly and carefully - using the best of behavioral
management
principles.
We understand the diversity
of human behavior and we appreciate that all adults differ in their
capacities and coping skills. 2nd FAMILY helps our clients to maximize
their abilities, while providing appropriate supervision until the
new skills are in place.
In the 2nd FAMILY program,
we use a treatment team approach and choose the treatment team depending
upon the needs and the budget. Team members typically consist of
a combination of psychologists, life-coaches, social workers, counselors,
personal assistants, physicians, and other professionals.
The treatment team provides
ongoing assessment of the client’s needs and then develops
a “treatment plan” that addresses those needs appropriately.
A treatment plan is like a map that is designed to bring about the
desired changes. It serves as a guide throughout the treatment process
and helps families to see the progress that is being made. We provide
progress updates to parents and family on a regular basis.
Here are some examples
of 2nd FAMILY program activities. It is important to remember that
counseling and psychotherapy would be ongoing in addition to the
following:
Finding and moving into
suitable housing
Securing employment
Enrolling in college
Finding appropriate physicians and other providers
Managing important appointments
Support during legal actions
Acting as a personal advocate and liaison
Teaching time management
Budgeting
Goal setting
Acclimating to city life
Transportation
